Although State Law does not prohibit cell phone usage while driving a vehicle (except in an active school zone), the Sachse Police Department would like to remind drivers to pay close attention to the roadway when driving. During the first five months of 2013, the Sachse Police Department has worked 73 reportable vehicle accidents (these are accidents requiring paperwork and submittal to the State). The contributing factor on 20 of these accidents were "driver inattention". This was either driver's texting, or other distractions in the vehicle.That calculates to 27% of the accidents. The contributing factor on 22 of the accidents were "failing to control speed". This usually is where vehicle are following to close to the vehicle in front of them and cannot stop in a timely fashion when the vehicle in front of them stops. That calculates to 30% of the accidents. If we could eliminate these two factors, it would have prohibited 57% of the accidents in 2013 from occurring. Please pay attention to the roadway while driving and leave distance between you and other drivers on the road.
