Chief Lopez, representing Sheriff Lee Baca, joined senior law enforcement officials Tuesday, including Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano at the White House where they were briefed on the bipartisan immigration reform bill now in Congress.
The briefing covered ways the bill will strengthen border security, homeland security, “home-town” security, community relationships, and the need for commonsense immigration reform.
Sheriff Baca asked Chief Lopez to inform officials such as Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, Director of White House Domestic Policy Council Cecilia Munoz, Director of the Office of National Drug Council Gil Kerlikowske, U.S. Department of Justice Acting Associate Attorney General Tony West and Associate Director of White House Public Engagement Julie Rodriguez about the enforcement challenges in Los Angeles County.
Last month, immigration bill S. 744 was introduced in the U.S. Senate, which is intended to enhance border security, create an employment verification system, and create a conditional path for citizenship. Sheriff Baca wants to ensure this plan is adequately funded and will improve public safety in Los Angeles County. Sheriff Baca stated, "We need to use every law enforcement tool available to keep dangerous criminals and drugs from crossing our border into the United States.”
