Wabash County man arrested in rural Fremont home after standoff with police.
On 5/14/13, the Steuben County Sheriff’s office was contacted by the Wabash County Sheriff’s Office requesting officers check for a wanted person out of Wabash County at a rural Fremont home. Wabash county had information that Kenneth Eltzroth, 44 years old of Wabash, was hiding at a residence on 827 south of Fremont. Eltzroth was wanted in Wabash County for several drug related charges and failing to appear for a jury trial.
Officer’s confirmed the information with the home owner and went to the residence to attempt to arrest Eltzroth on the Wabash County warrant. Eltzroth immediately shut all doors to the residence and barricaded himself in the home, refusing to speak to officers. A search warrant for the residence was secured and Northeast Indiana SWAT was called due to information received of weapons Eltzroth had access to in the home.
After approximately 3 hours of attempted negotiations with no contact or cooperation from Eltzroth, Northeast Indiana SWAT deployed irritant gas in to the home. Eltzroth subsequently surrendered without incident. Eltzroth will be turned over to Wabash County to face their charges. All questions about his charges should be addressed to them.
