MAY 12-18 IS NATIONAL POLICE WEEK

From the www.policeweek.org webpage:
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Here in San Mateo County:
On the Peninsula, Police Agencies including San Mateo Police Department pay respect to the memories of peace officers who have given their lives in the furtherance of public safety. The San Mateo County Police Chiefs and Sheriff Association performed a ceremony in Redwood City to honor local officers who have fallen in the line of duty, and will continue participation in observance of National Police Week this week, May 13-17.

Please join the men and women of the San Mateo Police Department in remembering those who have given their lives in their brave endeavor to fiercely protect and keep our communities safe.

SMPD's Sergeant Gordon Joinville - HERO
On May 23, 1968, Sergeant Gordon R. Joinville was shot and killed by Zachery Ford Lilliard. He is the only San Mateo officer to have been killed in the line of duty. Sergeant Joinville was 34 years old and a 12-year police veteran at the time of his death. He left behind a wife, Margaret, and two small children.

Please keep Sergeant Joinville's memory and his family in your thoughts as we also near the 45th Anniversary of his tragic line-of-duty death. For more information about Sgt. Joinville and about the history of the San Mateo Police Department, visit SMPD's webpage:
