The Amarillo Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit would like to remind everyone of the various educational programs and services available to the public. The Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) can provide presentations to groups of as few as 10 people to as many as necessary for your group/organization. If you have a civic group, club or neighborhood organization that needs a presentation, please contact CPU at 378-4257 or e-mail us at [email protected]. Presentations are also available to businesses and school organizations. Topics include Personal Safety For Women (keeping yourself safe outside the home), Home Safety & Security (discussion includes tips for securing your residence to keep burglars out), Workplace Violence (what to look for and how to respond to threats/incidents within the workplace), and Scam, Frauds and Identity Theft (includes what type of scams Amarillo is seeing and what you can do to avoid becoming a victim). Presentations can be scheduled during the workday or evening hours. These presentations are provided at no cost to the organization or individual requesting the program, and can be created to fill a specific prevention need.
The Crime Prevention Unit also provides free Home Security Inspections. This inspection may entitle the homeowner to a 5% reduction in their insurance premiums. Basic requirements are 1) Solid wood or metal clad doors with deadbolt locks 2) Additional locking devices on all opening windows 3) Additional locking device on garage door (if garage is attached) 4) Sliding doors must have additional locking device. Most homes fit these basic requirements, but may require some small changes/additions. Even though some insurance companies do not offer this discount to the homeowner, an inspection also provides some peace of mind to the homeowner.
