Update: Suspect Arrested May 5th in May 1st LASD Santa Clarita Deputy Involved Shooting

Fifth News Release related to this incident:

On May 1, 2013 at approximately 7:20 p.m., deputies assigned to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station were involved in an on-duty deputy involved shooting in the area of Adon Avenue and Sierra Highway, Canyon Country.

Detectives have learned that deputies attempted to contact a male adult riding a bicycle. The suspect abandoned his bike and ran to a wash area. The suspect reached into his backpack, turned towards deputies and pointed a handgun in their direction, resulting in a deputy-involved shooting. The suspect did not shoot at deputies. The suspect fled on foot and it was unknown at the time if he was hit by gunfire. An airsoft weapon resembling a firearm was located at the scene of the shooting.

A containment was established and search concluded; however, the suspect was not located. The suspect was identified as Corey Kieffer a 28 year-old male from Canyon Country.

On Saturday May 5, 2013 at approximately 9:45 a.m., Suspect Kieffer was located by LASD Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Deputies and arrested without incident (without the use of force).

Upon contact, deputies discovered that Suspect Keiffer had an injury to his hand. The injury was reviewed by medical professionals at a local hospital, and was determined to be a gunshot wound which was possibly sustained as the result of the deputy involved shooting days earlier.

Keiffer is at a local hospital undergoing treatment, and is listed in fair condition. The booking process for a burglary warrant and undetermined charges related to the deputy involved shooting are pending.

Suspect Keiffer will be held without bail.

Whenever a Deputy Involved Shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies and it results in the wounding of a suspect, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Office of the Los Angeles County District Attorney, in addition to investigations by Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. Attorneys with the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review also respond to the scene and have full access to the facts know to the Sheriff's Department throughout every phase of these investigations. Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.

Update: LASD Santa Clarita Valley Deputy Involved Shooting Suspect Taken Into Custody Without Incident. Sat 9:45 AM
Saturday 9:45 AM- Suspect Corey Kieffer, a 28 year- old white male from Canyon Country was taken into Custody by SCV Sheriff’s Deputies without incident.

Mr. Kieffer was being sought for questioning in connection with an armed assault on a Santa Clarita Deputy. He is also wanted on an unrelated No Bail arrest warrant for burglary.

Investigation Continues into LASD Santa Clarita Valley Deputy Involved Shooting. Suspect Identified.

On Wednesday, May 1st, 2013 at approximately 7:20 p.m., deputies assigned to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station were involved in an on-duty deputy involved shooting in the area of Adon Avenue and Sierra Highway, Canyon Country.

The alleged suspect has been identified as Corey Kieffer a 28 year-old white male from Canyon Country. Mr. Kieffer is approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighs 140 pounds, has brown hair and hazel eyes. Mr. Kieffer is being sought for questioning in connection with an armed assault on Santa Clarita Deputies. During the assault the suspect pointed a gun at deputy personnel. He is a transient and is known to frequent the wash area near Camp Plenty Road and Soledad Canyon Road. He is known to be a narcotic user.

An extensive search was conducted throughout the night for Mr. Kieffer, but he has not yet been located. This individual should be considered armed and dangerous. If seen, do not approach. Immediately call 9-1-1.

These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Internal Affairs Bureau as well as Sheriff's station or Detective Division investigators. Attorneys with the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review also respond to the scene and have full access to the facts known to the Sheriff's Department throughout every phase of these thorough investigations. Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.

Sheriff's Internal Affairs Bureau detectives are continuing their investigation into a deputy- involved shooting that occurred on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at approximately 7:25 PM near the intersection of Adon Avenue and Sierra Highway, Canyon Country.

Detectives have learned that Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's deputies attempted to contact a male adult riding a bicycle. The suspect abandoned his bike and ran to a wash area. The suspect reached into his backpack, turned towards deputies and pointed a handgun in their direction, resulting in a deputy-involved shooting. The suspect fled on foot and it is unknown if he was hit by gunfire.

A containment was established; however, the suspect has not been located. Although street closures have been lifted and residents have been allowed back into their homes, deputies are continuing their search for the suspect.

*Preliminary Information*

Deputy Involved Shooting, Active Search of Area for Shooting Suspect. (LASD Santa Clarita Valley Patrol Area)

LOCATION: Shooting near Sarabande Lane and Dolan Way. Active search area bordered by Sierra Highway, Soledad Canyon Road and Sarabande Lane, Canyon Country.

DATE: May 1, 2013
TIME: 7:10 PM
UNIT: Santa Clarita Patrol Station
SUSPECT: Male White, about 28 years old, blue shirt, gray shorts, blue hat (unknown type of handgun)

NARRATIVE:

Santa Clarita Station deputies were fired upon by a suspect with a gun near Sarabande Lane and Dolan Way.

(NOTE: IT WAS LATER DETERMINED THAT THE SUSPECT DID NOT SHOOT AT DEPUTIES)

Deputies fired back and the suspect fled. No deputies were injured. It is unknown if the suspect was hit.

An active containment and search is being conducted at this time. Residents in the area are asked to stay inside until it is safe.

Investigators from the Internal Affairs Bureau are responding to the scene.
