Trooper Struck by Car While Working Crash (With Photo)

Indianapolis. IN- An Indianapolis trooper is home this evening recovering from minor injuries he suffered to his lower extremities after being struck by a vehicle while working a crash.

This afternoon, May 7th, at approximately 4:45 p.m., Trooper Ronneal Williams was working a property damage crash on I-65 NB at the Pennsylvania/Meridian Street Exit. (Exit 113) The two vehicles involved in the crash were in the middle lane of I-65 and Trooper Williams informed the drivers he wanted to move them to the exit ramp for safety and to open the lanes of I-65.

Trooper Williams was standing behind a 2000 Ford Expedition being operated by Ronald Greene, 64, of Indianapolis, assisting him in backing up. Greene was one of the drivers involved in the crash.
While Greene was backing, Trooper Williams observed a Ford passenger car approaching him from the rear and not stopping. Williams motioned and yelled for Greene to stop backing to no avail. Williams was struck in the lower legs by a metal luggage rack that was installed in the Expedition receiver hitch. Williams was knocked down and rolled to safety as Greene continued backing and struck the Ford passenger car.

Trooper Williams was transported to Methodist Hospital with complaint of pain and abrasions to his lower legs. He was treated, released and is recovering at home.

Greene was issued a traffic citation for Disregarding a Police Officer Directing Traffic.
