Twenty-two members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are caravanning 380 miles from Sheriff’s Headquarters to Sacramento in honor of California Peace Officers killed in the line of duty.
The deputies’ journey started Sunday morning, May 5, 2013. They will be driving marked Sheriff’s patrol vehicles with black bands across the Sheriff’s Insignia. The black bands represent the loss of peace officers who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies will be joining other California law enforcement officers and participate in the 2013 California Peace Officer’s Candlelight Vigil and Memorial ceremony in memory of California Peace Officers who died in the line of duty.
Two members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, who were killed in the line of duty in the early 1900’s, will be honored and remembered at this year’s California memorial. The discovery of their sacrifices was recently made through historical research.

End of Watch (EOW): January 4, 1909
On January 4, 1909, Deputy Constable De Moranville responded to a Newhall saloon in search of a suspect who had been involved in a fight. He discovered the suspect was no longer at that location. Deputy De Moranville suddenly heard gunshots and ran toward the direction of the shots. He encountered the suspect near railroad tracks and a gunfight ensued. Deputy Constable De Moranville was fatally shot. The bullet entered under his arm and lodged in his heart. He was killed instantly. The suspect was captured a short time later.

EOW: September 14, 1924
On September 14, 1924, a distraught woman entered the office of Newhall Justice P.C. Miller and reported that a man with whom she had an on again off again relationship threatened to do her harm. The suspect was sitting on the front porch of her home a mile outside of town awaiting her return. Deputy Constable Jack Pilcher and Deputy Constable Ed Brown were dispatched to the house to confront the man. Less than a hundred yards from the woman’s front door, the suspect sprung from the bushes and demanded the deputies to stop. The deputies drove past him, and he immediately opened fire on their car, riddling it with bullets. The two lawmen returned fire and the suspect appeared to be willing to surrender. As Deputy Brown and Deputy Pilcher approached the suspect, he suddenly drew a .45 pistol from under his shirt and shot Deputy Brown in the stomach. Deputy Pilcher emptied his weapon at the suspect, killing him. Deputy Pilcher then loaded Deputy Brown into his car and sped off toward a hospital. Although surgery was performed on Deputy Brown, he succumbed to his wound.
