Steuben County Sheriff receives increased L.A.R.E. grant funding for 2013 marine patrol efforts

I am pleased to announce that the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office has received L.A.R.E. Grant funding confirmation from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The grant application was submitted at the beginning of 2013 for the purposes of Marine Patrol and boater education efforts in Steuben County. LARE funding approval for 2013 is in the amount of $25,000.00 dollars. This is a $10,000.00 dollar increase over the amounts received in the years past. The increase for 2013 is due to the amount of man hours needed to cover lake patrols throughout the summer season. This calculation was done from the 2012 activity statistical reports from Deputy activity on the lakes, the number of complaints the Deputies responded to and the fact that in 2012 there were no major boating accidents or fatalities as a result. Patrols last year also were conducted on lakes not previously patrolled and the increase in funding will enhance our ability to cover more lakes this summer. The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to high visibility and boater education upon Steuben County lakes during the boating season and is an addition to efforts by the Department of Natural Resources enforcement division.

Cpl. Adam Miller will once again lead a group of Marine volunteer/reserve and full time Deputies. Cpl. Miller will coordinate patrol efforts and overall operations throughout the boating season. Boater education training classes will be conducted by Marine Deputy Jim Kidd. Individuals wanting to take a boater education class can do so by going to www.steubensheriff.com and clicking on the link on the bottom of the home page.
