On 5-2-13, at approximately 2:42pm, an officer was dispatched to the 5100 block of Pico at the park adjacent to Gene Howe Elementary School reference a suspicious male in the area. Upon arrival the officer began looking in the area for the suspicious male. The officer then observed a male subject near the restrooms of the park and began approaching him. The H/M saw the officer and immediately went inside the restroom and locked the door. The officer knocked several times on the door and eventually the subject exited the restroom. The male subject immediately swung at the officer and struck him in the face then took off running. The officer began chasing the subject and attempted to deploy a taser on him, but was unsuccessful. The officer eventually caught up to the suspect and took him into custody in front of Gene Howe Elementary. The officer was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released. The suspect was later identified as Benito Sanchez H/M 27 of Amarillo. Sanchez was arrested and booked into the Randall County Jail on charges of Assault on a Public Servant and Evading Arrest.
