DUI/Driver's License checkpoint results

On the evening of April 19, 2013, the Gilroy Police Department’s Traffic Unit conducted a DUI/ Driver’s License checkpoint within the city limits. Approximately 550 vehicles drove through the checkpoint. One driver was arrested for DUI; a second was arrested for a felony warrant, twenty citations were issued to drivers for driving unlicensed, and eight citations were issued to drivers driving on a suspended license.

Funding for this checkpoint was provided to the Gilroy Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Gilroy Police Department’s Traffic Unit will continue to have these checkpoints. The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough.
