UPDATED MEDIA RELEASE MARCH 28, 2013
FIREFIGHTER STRUCK AND KILLED BY VEHICLE IN CLINTON TWP. IDENTIFIED
Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns, III and Clinton Township Police Director Robert Manney are reporting that the investigation into a New Jersey State Forest Fire Service Firefighter that was struck and killed by a vehicle on Route 629 in Clinton Township is ongoing. The incident occurred today, March 28th, at approximately 11:30 am. The victim is being identified as Jeffrey Scheuerer, age 35, of Raritan Township. Mr. Scheuerer was also a member of the Readington Volunteer Fire Company.
According to Prosecutor Kearns, “Mr. Scheuerer was working as a Firefighter with the New Jersey State Forest Fire Service. He and other members were conducting a controlled burn along Route 629 near Round Valley Reservoir. Our preliminary investigation indicates that a heavy smoke condition associated with the controlled burn was present at the time of the crash and may have caused reduced visibility when a shift in the wind occurred. Mr. Scheuerer was struck by a vehicle and did not survive his injuries.”
The incident is being investigated by the Clinton Township Police Department and the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Collision Team. Responding units included the Clinton Rescue Squad and EMS-1 Paramedics from Hunterdon Medical Center. The Town of Clinton Police Department is assisting with the investigation.
The Prosecutor added, “Our deepest condolences go out to Mr. Scheuerer’s family, Fire Chief John Rathborne and the Readington Volunteer Fire Company; as well as Mr. Scheuerer’s colleagues in the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.”
