One-Year Animal Shelter Resident, "Hazel" Finds Home Sweet Home
BURBANK ANIMAL SHELTER
After almost a full year of watching her neighbors be adopted, and thousands of people passing her by, Hazel a Labrador Retriever/Pit Bull mix from the Burbank Animal Shelter (BAS) found her forever home.
Hazel became a resident of the Burbank Animal Shelter (BAS) on March 30, 2012, after being surrendered by her owner because she did not let the gas company employee into their backyard.
She played a key role in many of the Shelter’s programs and services.
Ironically, because of Hazel’s friendly demeanor, she was elected to be used as an ambassador for the BAS Bite Prevention Trainings with Burbank Water and Power. The training helped educate the utility employees on how to approach dogs while in the field and how to define a dog’s body language.
“These workers often have to go into yards where they encounter pets that are protecting their yards and family,” explained Stacie Wood-Levin, BAS Senior Animal Control Officer.
“Hazel helped me show the class that when prompted to play, most Pit Bulls respond in a positive manner.”
Hazel was shown at numerous adoption events and also made her TV debut on the Burbank Adopt-a-Pet-Show, which can be seen on the Burbank local channel and features adoptable pets at BAS.
Even though she spent almost an entire year at the Shelter, the staff continued to be optimistic that Hazel would find the perfect family.
On a Saturday afternoon, a young couple looking to adopt a dog for their new home walked into to the Shelter. After meeting Hazel they knew that they had to take her home. “I don’t know how she didn’t get adopted before,” said her new owner Roberto De Leon a week after her adoption day. “She’s such a happy dog and she’s so well behaved.”
The BAS’s Staff and volunteers are very happy to see long-term resident Hazel go home with a great family. “This is what we all want for all our shelter dogs and its why those of us who work with them do what we do,” said volunteer Pat McCauley.
The Burbank Animal Shelter is located at 1150 N Victory Place. The Shelter is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
