Beware of a possible scam and suspicious activity at shopping centers.
Recently, an elderly female was at the Vons in Gardena and put her groceries in the trunk of her vehicle. As she got in her car to leave, an older African-American female knocked on her window to inform her that she found a wallet and asked her if she had lost her wallet. Then, another African-American female joined the conversation her and asked if she could help them and take them to the police station to turn in the wallet which they said had a significant amount of cash in it.
The elderly woman told them it was not her wallet and that she would not drive them anywhere. Fortunately, other shoppers witnessed the incident and she was able to drive away.
The woman later called a neighbor and said she was lucky that they didn't do her any harm, but came home without reporting it to the store manager or police. She said both women were possibly in their 60's and nicely dressed. She said that she felt like they had been watching and waiting for her to come out of the store.
Though there was no crime committed in this incident, the actions of the two females who contacted the elderly woman were still suspicious. If you are contacted by similar individuals, especially while seated in your vehicle, do not exit the vehicle or let them into the vehicle for any reason. If someone asks for a ride to the police station, just advise them to call the local police or call the police vial cell phone. Officers will gladly respond to the location to help out and to make sure that there is no illegal activity going on. If you call the police and the subjects who contacted you leave, just get as good a description of them (and any vehicles involved) as you can and give this information to the responding officers when they arrive. It's better to be safe than sorry.
