Advisory

Winter Weather Traffic Advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the Gainesville/Hall county area, indicating there is a chance we could see a mixture of rain and ice early tomorrow morning and into the day. Hazardous driving conditions are likely. If accumulations occurs, don't travel unless necessary. Adequate preperation ahead of time will prevent unnecessary trips.

If you must travel, be mindful of bridges and overpasses as they are generally the first areas to freeze. Also, be aware of "black ice" that is not immediately noticeable. The following driving tips will assist you if you must be on the roadways:

-DECREASE your speed. The slower the speed, the greater reaction time you will have.

-INCREASE your distance. Slick roadways are very unforgiving to sudden breaking. Maintain adequate distance between your car and the vehicle ahead of you to avoid sudden braking or a collision.

-DON'T PANIC if you do begin to slip or slide. Gently apply the brakes, if your vehicle begins to slip to one side or the other, turn in the direction of the slide.

-BE PREPARED. If you must travel, be ready to deal with a roadside emergency. Be sure to have a full tank of gas, a fully charged mobile phone, proper clothing for the conditions, a flashlight with fresh batteries, and a small amount of food and water should you become stranded.

Road and maintenance crews will be out in force should the need arise, be mindful of these workers as they prepare to make the roadways safe for travel, do not attempt to pass any of these crews.

Anyone wishing to report any trouble is asked to contact Hall County Central Communications at (770)-534-5251 or 911 in an emergency.
