Advisory

"Code Blue" Extreme Cold Weather Advisory is in effect. Shelter at 18 Neilson St. (Elijah's Promise) is available.

Due to the extreme cold weather forcasted for the next few days, New Brunswick will be in a "Code Blue" for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings. Elijah's Promise Soup Kitchen (18 Neilson Street) will remain open as a warming center from 7pm through 7am for unsheltered homeless individuals and families.

As the winter season progresses, New Brunswick will implement the winter weather, or “Code Blue”, emergency plan. In periods of extreme weather, defined as a temperature below 20°F, or 6 inches or more of snow, city agencies and private health/social service organizations will offer expanded services for those without adequate shelter, including the chronically homeless and homeless families with children. The goal of the Code Blue plan is to provide temporary shelter, food and clothing to those in need.

Code Blue will be determined by monitoring of National Weather Service forecasts. Code Blue declarations will be issued for a specific duration, usually based on 24-hour increments.

Residents of New Brunswick who need shelter during a Code Blue can go to the Soup kitchen, located at 18 Neilson St. between the hours of 7pm and 7am. If needed, transportation will be provided by local emergency responders. The Homeless Hotline will serve as a communication and assistance hub during Code Blue. The phone number for the hotline is 211.

In addition to the Homeless Hotline notification, Code Blue alerts will be sent to City Hall who will alert emergency responders, and area social and health service providers. Outreach teams will be mobilized to notify the homeless and ensure no one remains outside during dangerous weather.

If anyone sees a person on the streets who needs help, they are advised to call the Homeless Hotline 211 and a street outreach team or emergency responder will be dispatched.
