LOCATION: WALNUT PARK, D STREET @ PETALUMA BLVD SOUTH, PETALUMA
SUSPECTS: UNKNOWN
SUMMARY: On January 8, 2013, Petaluma Parks Department employees’ working in Walnut Park discovered a large bronze plaque memorializing 15 Petaluma veterans killed in Vietnam had been stolen from its’ base. The plaque had been placed on the base sometime in the mid-seventies near the park gazebo. It is believed the unknown suspect(s) pried the plaque off the base. The plaque is approximately 25” wide by 30” long and 1” thick. A citizen contacted during the investigation reported he had last seen the plaque in the park sometime between December 21, 2012 and December 25, 2012.
The Police Department is requesting anyone with information, to please contact Officer Bill Baseman at (707) 778-4372 at the Petaluma Police Department.
Local veterans groups are mobilizing a fund-raising campaign to replace the plaque and better secure it in a new memorial. Per Joe Noriel, president of the Petaluma Museum, the estimated value to replace just the plaque is $1000.00.
