Five New Troopers Report to Indianapolis District

Indianapolis, IN- Monday morning, January 2nd, Troopers Nicholas Brownfield, Walter Butt, Luis Deffit, Wade Heiny and Matthew Helmbrecht reported to the Indianapolis District to begin their careers as Indiana State Troopers. The five troopers were among 48 graduates of the 72nd Indiana State Police Recruit Academy, which graduated December 21st, 2012.

During the academy, recruits received approximately 930 hours of structured law enforcement training which included 80 hours of criminal law, 80 hours of vehicle operations training, and 47 hours of traffic law. They also developed skills in criminal investigation along with 47 hours of vehicle crash investigation and training related to impaired driver detection as well as numerous other law enforcement related subjects.

Trooper Nicholas Brownfield, 30, is from Fort Wayne, Indiana. He graduated from North Side High School in 2000 and attended Ball State University. Brownfield is a 1st Lieutenant in the Army National Guard and resides in New Palestine with his wife, son and daughter.

Trooper Walter Butt, 38, is native of Louisville, Kentucky and a 1992 graduate of South Oldham High School in Louisville. He currently attends Ashford University where he is attaining a B.A. Degree in Criminal Justice. Butt has served over 18 years in the U.S. Army and Indiana National Guard with multiple worldwide deployments. Butt resides in Indianapolis with his wife and two children.

Trooper Luis Deffit, 23, is a native of Puerto Ordaz, Bolivar, Venezuela and graduated from Bremerton High School in 2007. He attended Colorado State University, Pueblo and earned a B.S. Criminal Justice Degree from the Indiana Institute of Technology in 2007. Prior to being selected to attend the Indiana State Police Academy, Deffit was employed as a Security Officer at the Indianapolis Zoo. He resides in Indianapolis.

Trooper Wade Heiny, 26, is from Gas City, Indiana and a 2005 graduate of Mississinewa High School. He attended Wabash College and received a B.A. Degree in Psychology. Heiny and his wife reside in Greenfield.

Trooper Matthew Helmbrecht, 31, of Columbus in is a 2000 graduate of Columbus North High School. He attended Indiana University and received a B.A. Degree in Finance. He and his wife reside in Fishers.

The troopers have started their 14 weeks of field training with experienced troopers this week. This program allows them to put the skills and knowledge they gained in the academy to work in the field. Upon successful completion of the field training program, they will receive their own patrol car and begin solo patrol.
