New Year’s Eve Gunfire Down Thanks In Part to ShotSpotter

Despite a small uptick in the number of celebratory gunfire incidents this past New Year’s Eve, Century Station has seen a decrease in the number of celebratory gunfire incidents over the years due in part to reduction campaigns by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Los Angeles Police Department, and ShotSpotter.

ShotSpotter is a gunfire alert and location technology that uses acoustic sensors to triangulate the precise location of where a gunshot is coming from within the coverage area. Used by the military for years, Century Station acquired this technology in 2004 and has used it to deter gun violence and shorten response times to shootings.

Between the hours of 10:00 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 2:00 a.m. on New Year’s Day, a total of 13 ShotSpotter activations for gunfire were recorded. Last New Year, a total of 12 ShotSpotter activations for gunfire were recorded. From four years ago, these figures represent a 65% decrease in the number of celebratory gunfire incidents within the coverage area.
