2 injured in head on crash

Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. reports that on 1-2-2012 at 1544 his office was called to investigate a personal injury crash. 45 yr old Niles resident, Norman Smith, was traveling on Leet rd when his vehicle began to drift across the center line. 48 yr old Hammond resident, Demetrois Athanasopoulos, was operating the vehicle in the oncoming lane. He crossed the center line attempting to avoid the Smith vehicle but was unsuccessful. Both were treated by and then transported by SMCAS Ambulance to St Joe Regional Hospital for further treatment. At this time it is believed that seat belts were used and that alcohol was not a factor. This case remains under investigation.
