Year to date crime change in Mission Area: down 2.8%. Thefts spiked in last four weeks #LAPD

Week ending December 22, 2012

With a week left in the year, the Mission Area improved by 3/10ths of a percentage over last year. Crime is down 2.8%, which is 139 fewer crimes this year over last year. That’s nearly 3 crimes less per week!

Over the last four weeks (holiday shopping season), THEFT spike the most of all crimes. A large number of those THEFTS were shoplifts from businesses.

And while BURG maintained the same left this month as the prior month, it was significantly down from this time last year. Nevertheless, officers made five arrests for BURG just this week, which was almost as many BURG arrests as the prior three weeks combined.

Car burglaries (BFMV) dropped off quite a bit from this time last year, but GTA (car theft) jumped UP about the same number that BFMV dropped.

The good news is that violent crime dropped off dramatically. ROBB is down for this time of year, and AGG (aggravated assault) is about one-third of what it was last month, and about half of what it was last year this time.

Notwithstanding the drop in violent crime, detectives had to investigate the 13th homicide for the year after a 22 year-old man stabbed his grandmother to death a week ago Sunday. The suspect was arrested at the family home in Sylmar where the crime occurred.

Happy Holidays to everyone in the Mission Area!

Be good to each other.
