UPDATED MEDIA RELEASE – 12/6/12 BLOOMSBURY MAN NOT GUILTY BY REASON OF INSANITY FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER OF HIS FAMILY

UPDATED MEDIA RELEASE – DECEMBER 6, 2012
BLOOMSBURY MAN NOT GUILTY BY REASON OF INSANITY FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER OF HIS FAMILY

Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns, III, announced that David Alonso, age 48, of Bloomsbury, was found not guilty today by reason of insanity. He had previously been arraigned on two counts of Attempted Murder and one count of Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose.
According to Prosecutor Kearns, “Mr. Alonso had agreed to waive his right to a jury trial and proceed with a bench trial, understanding that based on the medical reports the State would seek a finding of not guilty by reason of insanity.”
The Prosecutor provided the following case history, “On June 13, at 6:49am, Hunterdon County Communications received a 9-1-1 call reporting that two women with visible injuries were laying on the front lawn of a residence on Main Street in Bloomsbury. New Jersey State Police Troopers from the Perryville Station responded. Upon arrival, Troopers were confronted by the homeowner, David Alonso, who had a blunt object in his hand and was self inflicting injuries upon himself. An investigation conducted by the New Jersey State Police and the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office revealed that Mr. Alonso attacked his wife, Debra Alonso, and 24 year old daughter Malori Alonso, and then inflicted injuries on himself. All three suffered significant head injuries and were treated for several weeks at St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.”
Prosecutor Kearns added, “The investigation and medical evidence revealed that Mr. Alonso did not know what he was doing at the time of the incident. Hopefully he can get the treatment he needs and his family can continue on the road to recovery.”
