Scam callers posing as police officers calling residents asking them to send money to bond out relatives

SCAM ALERT- The Hamburg Township Police Department has received complaints from 3 different residents who report that they have received phone calls from persons claiming to be law enforcement officials. The scam caller advises the victim that a relative needs to be bonded out of jail or that money needs to be sent to avoid a warrant being issued against the relative. One of these scams was successful. The latest unsuccessful attempt occurred on 12/10/12 where the caller identified himself as a “deputy” with the state police.
Please remember that no legitimate law enforcement agency will ever contact you and ask you to wire or otherwise send money electronically. Contact your local police department, sheriff’s department or the Michigan State Police immediately if you receive a phone call from anyone claiming to be a law enforcement officer requesting that you send them money.
