Suspect apprehended after stealing a cell phone from a 62 year old victims pocket

DETAILS:
On 12-08-12 approximately 3:08PM, the San Leandro Police Department received a 911 call regarding a theft in progress at Fairmont Square, 1300 Fairmont Drive. The Reporting Party advised that a witness to the crime was chasing the suspect on foot. When officers arrived on scene they contacted the victim who advised that the suspect grabbed his cell phone from his pants pocket. The witness who was chasing the suspect advised officers that the suspect was last seen near Burger King, 15050 E14th Street. Officers located a subject who matched the suspect description exiting Burger King. The subject was detained and was identified as the suspect who committed the theft. The suspect, Jovann Augustus, a 20 year old male from Hayward was arrested for grand theft from a person. The loss was recovered when Augustus dropped the phone while being chased by the witness.
Lt. Tudor said, “The extraordinary efforts by the witnesses in this case lead to the arrest of a suspect who targeted the vulnerability of the 62 year old victim. This type of involvement demonstrates commitment to community and is great example of how important it is for all of us to work together to improve public safety and quality of life.”
