PRESS RELEASE

DATE OF RELEASE: 11/25/2012

INCIDENT: Elimination of the Alerting and Warning System

PRESS RELEASE OFFICER: Lt. Luis Torres

TELEPHONE: (510) 577-3245

LOCATION: City of San Leandro

DETAILS:

Beginning January 2013, the City of San Leandro will transition to a new radio system that includes 40 public agencies within Alameda and Contra Costa County. The East Bay Regional Communication System (EBRCS) will be a P-25 compliant communications system that will provide fully interoperable communications to all public agencies within the two counties. The system is designed and sized to offer participation to adjoining counties, as well as State and Federal agencies.

As a result of the transition to EBRCS, the City will have to discontinue the use of the Alerting and Warning System that consists of the 8 sirens throughout the city. This Alerting and Warning System is not compatible with the EBRCS.

The purpose of the Alerting and Warning System was to alert the community of a localized or citywide emergency and to tune into 1610 AM to obtain information about the emergency and what to do.

In anticipation of this transition, the City of San Leandro instituted the CodeRed Emergency Notification System, as well as NIXLE to be used in conjunction with 1610 AM.
CodeRed is an ultra high-speed telephone communication service for emergency notifications. This system allows the San Leandro Police Department to telephone subscribers.
NIXLE is a secure communications service available to municipal, county, and state government agencies. There is NO spam or advertising associated with NIXLE Municipal Wire messages. The system provides a quick, efficient, and secure way to get information out to subscribers.
Both systems are free, with the exception of standard text and data usage rates imposed by cell phone providers, and have the ability to reach all or targeted areas of the City in case of an emergency situation that requires immediate action.
The San Leandro Police Department feels that it is very important to be able to notify its community of an emergency. We highly encourage you to sign up for both systems to get timely alerts in case of major emergencies.
