INVESTIGATING DETECTIVE(S): Sergeant Doug Calcagno
SUSPECTS ARRESTED: Luis Martinez, date of birth 05/06/88, resident of Oakland
DETAILS:
On October 30, 2012, approximately 12:00 PM, a San Leandro Police Officer was contacted by a citizen in the 2100 block of East 14th Street. The citizen advised the officer that he had witnessed a subject (Luis Martinez) breaking into his vehicle. The citizen attempted to contact Martinez and Martinez fled in a waiting vehicle. The officer immediately provided San Leandro Police Staff with the details about the incident along with a description.
San Leandro Police Staff members representing several divisions started converging on the area. A motorcycle officer observed a subject fitting the suspect’s description driving a different vehicle in the area of Maud Avenue and Evergreen Avenue. The suspect quickly abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. The suspect was apprehended several blocks north of where he abandoned the vehicle in the 800 block of Juana Avenue. The subject ran through residential yards and he crossed several streets while trying to escape. It was later determined that the vehicle Martinez was driving had been stolen after he fled the scene of the burglary and was desperately trying to get away.
Lt. Randall Brandt said, “This is a perfect example about the police receiving the information immediately and being able to plug in the proper resources to orchestrate a successful outcome.”
