Lifeguards Attempt to Rescue Woman on Malibu Cliff - LASD Malibu Search & Rescue

At 4:15PM on Saturday, October 27, 2012, members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Malibu Search and Rescue Team responded to Pirates Cove, Malibu, just East of Westward Beach, to assist Los Angeles County Fire personnel with the rescue of a female climber and two lifeguards.

The female climber became stranded on a cliff side, approximately 50 feet from the rocks below. The stranded female climber was climbing shoeless in a bathing suit. She was located by lifeguards in a nearby ocean rescue boat. Using his radio, the lifeguard boat Captain guided other lifeguards to the woman’s location. The lifeguards climbed up to her, but then found themselves stuck as well.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Malibu Search and Rescue and Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel responded. A Malibu Search and Rescue team member was deployed over the side of the cliff. By the time of his arrival, the stranded woman had been rope rescued by some nearby climbers.

The Sheriff’s Malibu Search and Rescue team member harnessed each of the two lifeguards and lowered them safely to the sand below. The lifeguards and the woman were unhurt.

This was the second rescue at this same location in 2012.

Search and Rescue Team members are Reserve Sheriff’s deputies who volunteer their time to help others for $1 a year, and who partner with sheriff’s civilian volunteers who volunteer for free. There are over 150 members of the eight Search and Rescue teams of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. These rescuers were activated for over 450 search and rescue missions last year, making it one of the most active counties for search and rescue missions in the nation. Reserve deputies and civilian volunteers are supervised by full-time sheriff’s deputies. http://lasdreserve.org
