Advisory

Potential for a significant weather event impacting our area increasing.

While there is still time for the upcoming weather event to change, now is the time to prepare. This storm is unique in that it is a combination of multiple storm systems that is predicted to impact New Jersey during a full moon phase. This storm has the potential to deliver seven inches of rain, record coastal and inland flooding, and extreme wind conditions. The trees within our area remain full with leaves that will become heavy with rainfall and ground that will become unstable with saturation all lending to collapse onto power lines. Potential exists for damages worse than we saw with Hurricane Irene and the Dereccho plus more prolonged power outages as this may not only impact locally but numerous entire states. Residents should be evaluating their situation. Some may benefit from seeking shelter outside of the area. If deciding to shelter in your home, consider sustainability with regards to non-perishable food, water, medications, other health needs, and fuel. Remember to plan for your pets as well. Determine if you have sufficient back up batteries for lights and radios. If you use a generator, be mindful of safe discharge of exhaust outside to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. It is recommended that you establish a network of family/friends to help directly share information in the event traditional communications fail. Websites such as www.ready.gov/hurricanes provide excellent info for personal preparedness.
