PRESS RELEASE OFFICER: Lt. Randy Brandt

TELEPHONE: (510) 577-3232

DATE / TIME OCCURRED: 10/23/2012 10:53AM

LOCATION: 900 block of Arbor Road, San Leandro

INVESTIGATING DETECTIVE(S): Detective Doug Calcagno

DETAILS:

On Oct 23, 2013 about 10:53am, San Leandro Police Officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Arbor Rd. on a report of a suspicious car parked in the area. When officers arrived they found the vehicle, a green Grand Cherokee Jeep, unoccupied. A registration check revealed that the vehicle was stolen out of Livermore, Ca. A witness told the officers on scene that he noticed two African-American males inside the vehicle just a short time before officers arrived. As one officer was canvassing the neighborhood, another neighbor contacted the officer and told him he just heard glass breaking from behind his house.

More officers were called to the area and they surrounded the neighborhood block. One officer saw three African-American males exit from between two houses and ordered them to stop and not to move. Two of the males stopped after running away from the officer for a short distance. The third suspect continued to flee.

The two suspects who stopped were detained and searched for the officer’s safety. One of the suspects had a shaved vehicle key commonly used to steal vehicles. A short time later, the third suspect was apprehended trying to escape the area.

All three suspects were arrested and determined to be juveniles with Oakland addresses. The ages of the juveniles were 16, 14 and 13 years old. They were booked for the following charges:

Possessing a stolen vehicle, possessing burglary tools, burglary and resisting arrest.

This all would not have been possible without our citizens recognizing something suspicious and reporting their observations to the police without hesitation. We continue to have success by working with the community to solve crimes in a collaborative effort.
