Man Arrested After Pointing a Handgun at Trooper's Car

Muncie – – A Muncie man was arrested shortly after 1:30 a.m. yesterday morning after he allegedly pointed a handgun at a trooper’s police vehicle. Sunday morning Pendleton Trooper Ryan Davis was transporting a suspected intoxicated driver for a breath test when he stopped at a red light on 26th St. at Madison Avenue in Muncie.

The two were sitting in Davis’s maroon unmarked Crown Victoria when a 2001 Chevrolet car, northbound on Madison, stopped at the intersection even though they had the right of way.

As the vehicle began to drive again north through the intersection, a passenger in the rear seat pointed a handgun out the rear passenger side window at the trooper’s car. The subject then raised the muzzle upward and fired off a single shot in the air.

Trooper Davis turned after the vehicle and got it stopped at Madison and 25th St. The vehicle had three occupants, and as other officers arrived, all were ordered out of the car. The car’s rear seat passenger was Richie Lee Morton, age 27 of Muncie. A .380 caliber handgun was recovered from the scene.

Morton was arrested and charged with Criminal Recklessness, Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Pointing a Firearm, all Class “D” Felonies. He was lodged in the Delaware County Jail. It’s unknown at this time why Morton pointed the firearm and discharged it in the air.
