FAQ: Oakland Police Department “CompStat” – What is it?

The Oakland Police Department is now holding its bi-weekly “CompStat” meeting. CompStat is a public safety strategy evaluation meeting where crime and activity over the last CompStat period is measured against the most recent strategies and resources dedicated to impact them. Where adjustment, redirection or improvement is needed, changes are implemented during the CompStat period that follows. CompStat makes the difference in intelligence-led policing practices, where officers in your neighborhood are aware of the criminal activity, what may be causing it, who may be responsible, and have partnerships, resources and objectives in place to address crime in the area where it may likely occur.

CompStat also tracks and measures the activities and effectiveness of our officers in the field. What is obvious during this period is the number of times officers have encountered situations involving armed persons, and how those encounters have resulted in safe arrests and firearm recoveries:

4 Oct 2900 block E7th - Search Warrant handgun/narcotics
7 Oct - 9900 block 99th Ct - Arrests and 3 handguns recovered
5 Oct - 2500 block E20th St - Arrest and handgun recovered
5 Oct - 8100 block Dowling- Search Warrant - 1 handgun/narcotics recovered
5 Oct - 8100 block International Blvd –Handgun recovery
5 Oct – 7200 block San Leandro - Arrests and handgun recovery
8 Oct - 8600 block Hillside - Arrest and handgun recovery

City-wide Nixle users and Twitter followers (@oaklandpoliceca) have recently received 25 separate messages regarding officers safely making arrests and recovering firearms. This routine yet dangerous work is almost never mentioned in media stories of the day, but represents our officers’ dedication and focus to our community’s safety.
