The Oakland Police Department previously alerted you to the circumstances of the shooting reported late last night, that at about 9:18 pm, OPD officers responded to the 9600 block of Birch Street on multiple reports of shots fired.

Officers found a vehicle which had crashed into a parked vehicle and which was also engulfed in flames. Inside the vehicle, they found an as of yet unidentified male who had been shot. A second male was located in the area who had been struck by gunfire in the leg. Both were transported to Alameda County Hospital. The victim removed from the vehicle succumbed to injury, and the investigation now regards homicide.

There is evidence of dozens of rounds being fired in the area. In addition to the two victims, several nearby vehicles and homes were hit by gunfire.

This investigation is open and ongoing. Investigators from the Major Crimes Section (238-3821) responded to the scene for investigation and continue to ask for the community's help with leads and tips.
