PRESS RELEASE
DATE / TIME OF RELEASE: 09/28/12 6:00 PM INCIDENT: Suicidal Subject
RELEASE OFFICER: Lt. Luis Torres TELEPHONE: (510) 577-3245
DATE / TIME OCCURRED: 09/28/12 1:35 PM
LOCATION: 13699 Monarch Bay Drive
INVESTIGATING DETECTIVE: N/A
SUSPECT: N/A
DETAILS:
This afternoon at 1:35 PM, the San Leandro Police Department received a 911 call from an off-duty officer regarding a person with a gun at the San Leandro Marina Park Path and Par Course. When officers arrived, they observed an individual about 100 yards away with what appeared to be a handgun in his hand. For the safety of the public in the area, officers evacuated the Marina Park, Path and Par course.
Based on the location of the individual, officers were unable to approach safely. Officers on scene requested the assistance of the California Highway Patrol’s fix winged aircraft and the Hayward Police Department’s armored vehicle.
At one point the subject took out what appeared to be a knife and began cutting his arms and walking towards officers and making suicidal threats. A hostage negotiator made several commands for the individual to drop the items in his hands. When he didn’t comply with all their commands, officers used less lethal weapons to gain his compliance. The subject was subsequently detained and transported to an area hospital for treatment.
The items in his hand turned out to be a replica firearm and a knife.
Lt. Luis Torres said, “Officers did an excellent job in using proper tactics and less lethal means to disarm this individual and get him the help he needed. This could have been a deadly situation for everyone involved, had it not been for the professionalism of the officers on scene and the use of the armored vehicle which allowed the officers to be in a position to safely resolve this incident.”
