Nature of Incident: National Drug Take Back to Take Place this Saturday
Report Number: N/A
Location: Sheriff’s Headquarters and all Sheriff’s Office substations
Date & Time: Sept. 29, 2012, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Unit Responsible: Ventura County Sheriff’s Office / Drug Enforcement Administration
(S)uspects, (V)ictims, (D)ecedent City of Residence Age

Narrative:
This Saturday will be another opportunity for members of the community to properly dispose of unwanted or unused prescription drugs at any Sheriff’s Office substation. Staff will be on hand from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. to receive any prescription medications from the public. This will ensure the items are properly stored for future destruction and do not end up in the wrong hands where they could cause harm.

People often keep unused prescription medications long after their usefulness. This can present a temptation for teens or young children to begin experimenting with drugs without knowing their intended purpose or side effects.

Many people using illegal street drugs today began by experimenting with prescription drugs in their parents’ medicine cabinet.

By participating in the event, area residents can help prevent the abuse and improper disposal of prescription medications.

There is no cost to residents for this service, and no identification or paperwork is required.

The following items can be accepted: prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, medication samples, medications for pets, vitamins, medicated ointments/lotions, inhalers, or liquid medication in leak-proof containers.

The following items cannot be accepted: needles (sharps), controlled substances, medical waste, or IV bags.

The locations are:

Ojai Police Department: 402 S. Ventura St. Ojai, Ca.
Fillmore Police Department: 524 Sespe Ave. Fillmore, Ca.
Headquarters Station: 800 S. Victoria Ave. Ventura, Ca.
Camarillo Police Department: 3701 Las Posas Rd. Camarillo, Ca.
Moorpark Police Department: 610 Spring Rd. Moorpark, Ca.
Thousand Oaks Police Department: 2101 E. Olsen Rd. Thousand Oaks, Ca.

During the past two years, several thousand pounds of medications have been turned in for disposal at police stations throughout the county.

In addition to Saturday’s event, residents can dispose of their medications throughout the year during business hours at any of the stations in the county.

A comprehensive list of available locations for Saturday’s event can be found at www.dea.gov.
