On Sunday September 9, 2012 at approximately 3:55 PM, the Absecon Police Department responded to the Absecon Rite Aid for a strong armed robbery that had just occurred. Employees from the Rite Aid advised the police that a Hispanic male had concealed merchandise in his pants and attempted to leave the store without paying. When confronted by the assisted manager the suspect, identified as Ronell Ruiz, age 33 of Egg Harbor City assaulted the assisted manger as well as another employee as he attempted to get away from them. Employees watched the suspect as he crossed the median on the White Horse Pike and headed east until they lost sight of him in the area of the White Horse Pike and Mill Rd.
As the area was being searched, members of the Absecon EMS service had heard the original call go out and observed a male matching the suspect’s description walking on the train tracks heading east. A perimeter was set up and the suspect was located hiding behind the Absecon Veterinary Hospital in the woods by DSgt. Robert Ponzetti, Ptl. Christian Cavileer and Ptl. Richard Huenke Jr.
The suspect was charged with robbery, two counts of simple assault, possession of a syringe and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail was set at $50,000.00 cash. The suspect was unable to post bail and he was lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility
