Patrol Officers Make Additional Arrests for Armed Street Robberies on Friday Night, August 7th
Last evening, September 7, 2012 at 10:40 PM, Oakland police officers responded to an area near 40th St. and Broadway to investigate a report of an armed robbery. Officers made contact with the victims, Oakland residents, who were robbed by two subjects at gunpoint; the victims were possibly specifically targeted for their smart-phone(s).
Patrol officers conducted a preliminary investigation which led them to safely detain a vehicle and three occupants based on suspect descriptions. The victims’ loss from the robbery and a loaded firearm were recovered during the course of the stop. Two adult males and one adult female, all Oakland residents, were arrested on probable cause.
The investigation is on-going. Anyone with additional information about this, or any other possibly related crime, is asked to contact the Oakland Police Department’s Robbery & Assault Unit at (510) 238-3326.
This is the latest of several recent arrests made for armed street robberies. We are committed to addressing gun crime and violence, but urge the community to be mindful of the following:
Report Criminal Activity
- Call 535-GUNS = (510) 535-4867 to leave an anonymous message regarding illegal gun possession, use or sales. Statistics have shown that, often, suspects involved in gun crime have previous arrests or ties to gun possession or to criminal gangs or activities where gun possession is chronic. Reporting gun crime BEFORE a violent crime occurs may be the best way to save a life - perhaps even the life of someone you know.
- For crimes occurring or for emergencies, dial 9-1-1 or (510) 777-3211 by cell phone in Oakland to be connected directly to an Oakland Police Department dispatcher. (9-1-1 calls on cell phones are routed through CHP, and transferring causes unnecessary delay.)
- You may also call the Crime Stoppers tip line - 510-777-8572. The information you leave is forwarded to the appropriate investigators or officers. You may receive a reward for information.
Avoid Being a Victim
Remain mindful that victims of recent street robberies were most often targeted for their known possession of personal electronics (e.g., smart phones, tablets) or visible gold jewelry. Factors, such as the victim’s awareness of surroundings, or ease of access to the personal electronic device to others, may have contributed to the likelihood of the crime occurring.
Be Prepared to Report
- Take the time to record the serial numbers of your personal electronic devices, and keep the information somewhere, or with someone, to access in case the device is taken in a robbery, burglary, or theft. Have this information available when making a report to police.
- Consider installing owner managed tracking software on applicable personal electronic devices to assist with recovery
