Advisory

Death Penalty Ruling Unanimously Affirmed

On October 30, 1997, Deputy Michael Hoenig, assigned to Century Station, was shot and killed as he tried to conduct a bicycle stop of Enrique Duenas in the city of South Gate. In the moments following the shooting, investigators located the suspect and arrested him for the murder of Deputy Hoenig.

Duenas was later tried and convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to death. On August 6, 2012, the California State Supreme Court rejected Duenas’ appeal and unanimously affirmed the prior trial court’s ruling. The California State Supreme Court ruled that the trial court did not make multiple errors and did not deny Duenas a fair trial. The judgment of the trial court was affirmed and Enrique Duenas remains on death row at San Quentin State Prison.

Deputy Michael Hoenig will never be forgotten, nor will the efforts of everyone involved in bringing his killer to justice.
