Juvenile Arrested In Attempted Murder Of CHP Officer
Oakland, CA — Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan and US Marshal Donald M.O’Keefe along with representatives from the California Highway Patrol, Lieutenant Steve Larson, Acting Sergeant Steve Lott, and Public Information Officer Sam Morgan held a press conference to announce the recent arrest of a wanted person in connection with the attempted murder of a CHP officer.
Today the Oakland Police Department, CHP, and the US Marshals Task Force Team arrested wanted person Kenyon Thomas (DOB 09-03-95) of Oakland in connection with the attempted murder of a CHP officer on July 21, 2012. Thomas was arrested in the 1400 block of Bay Street in East Palo Alto at about 11:00 am this morning.
Chief Jordan told the media that he has asked for federal and local support in his efforts to fight crime in Oakland. The Chief went on to say, “our efforts to impact violence are dangerous and I am thankful to the men and women from our partnering law enforcement agencies for the dangerous work they do. I take it very seriously when the lives of our fellow law enforcement officers are threatened by criminals while in the performance of their duties.”
Background: On July 21, 2012, at about 8:26 PM, a California Highway Patrol Officer in support of the Oakland Police Department’s efforts to fight crime attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a van near the 800 block of 50th Avenue. The van failed to yield to the officer and a pursuit ensued.
A second suspect vehicle rammed the officer several times during the pursuit. The occupants of this second suspect vehicle fired several rounds at the CHP officer as the pursuit continued into the 800 block of 42nd Avenue. The CHP officer was not injured.
The occupants of the van were subsequently arrested (Samiuela Sina and David Gonzalez). The occupants of the second suspect vehicle fled on foot.
On July 23, 2012, in the 2400 block of East 24th Street, the Oakland Police Gangs Gun Intelligence Task Force, (GGITF) in cooperation with CHP, Fremont Police SWAT team, Union City Police SWAT team, US Marshals, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Oakland Housing Authority safely arrested an individual in connection with the shooting (Joseph Gonzalez).
