The Absecon Police Department is investigating several attempted cell phone scams involving extortion. On Friday August the 17th, and Saturday August the 18th, 2012, two Absecon residents reported receiving a phone call from an unknown male subject who claimed to have had a loved one in his custody. On both occasions, the male stated to have the complainant’s fathers as a hostage and threatened to harm them if they did not comply. The male suspect requests the phone call recipient to wire him money electronically in return for the release of their loved one. Police were able to make contact with the supposed “hostages” who confirmed they were okay and not in any danger. Both complainants were able to provide police with the same cell phone number which originates from New York City.
