8-17-2012 TOPSFIELD EEE - WNV UPDATE

August 17: Mosquitoes have been trapped in Topsfield this past week and none were found positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).

However, a pool of mosquitoes collected this week in the northeast quadrant of Topsfield tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV).

In spite of this, Topsfield remains at “Low” risk for mosquito-borne disease.

In “Low Risk” areas, precautions include:

 Repair all screens.
 Wear mosquito repellent when outside during times of peak mosquito activity (dusk to dawn).
 Wear long pants and long sleeves when outside during times of peak mosquito activity (dusk to dawn).
 Use mosquito netting on baby carriages and playpens used outdoors.
 Take precautions to dump any standing water where mosquitoes may breed including buckets, unused kiddie pools, old tires, etc.

NOTE: WEATHER PERMITTING, THE NORTHEAST MASSACHUSETTS MOSQUITO CONTROL WILL BE CONDUCTING TARGETED TRUCK MOUNTED SPRAYING LATE MONDAY NIGHT, AUGUST 20 IN THE NORTHEAST QUADRANT OF TOPSFIELD; NORTH OF ROUTE 97 AND EAST OF ROUTE 1.
