8-15-2012 EEE Update: Targeted Truck Mounted Spraying in the town of Topsfield.

Spraying occurred at Pye Brook Park Monday evening, August 13 as scheduled.
Truck Mounted Spraying on selected streets of Topsfield remains scheduled for late this evening, August 15, weather-permitting.
The area slated for spraying remains west of Route 1 and north of Ipswich Road.
Property owners should consider the following:
· Under optimal conditions the spray will not reach greater than 300 feet beyond the street. No known effect on birds.· Night-time spraying avoids foraging bees. No known effect on aquatic life. No known effect on swimming pools. Formula used supplies just enough mosquito adulticide to be effective on mosquitoes. All areas receiving the spray may be used the following day for outdoor activities.

STATE HEALTH OFFICIALS ANNOUNCE FIRST HUMAN CASE AND FIRST HORSE CASE OF WEST NILE VIRUS IN MASSACHUSETTS

Residents urged to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites

BOSTON – Wednesday, August 15, 2012 – The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) today announced the first human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in the state this year. The patient is a resident of Middlesex County north of Boston in his 60’s who was diagnosed with WNV in late July and remains hospitalized, but is recovering. Based on this finding, health officials have raised the WNV threat level to “Moderate” in Arlington, Belmont, Cambridge, Somerville, and Watertown.

Separately, officials have also confirmed the first case of WNV in a horse located in the town of Ludlow in Western Massachusetts, raising the WNV threat level in that town to “High.”
The threat level in the town of Topsfield remains "Low" at this time.
