Cell Phone and Electronic Device Crime Prevention

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has experienced an increase robberies and thefts of electronic devices. Although the related crimes in the Crescenta Valley Station area are small and arrests have been made for cell phone thefts, we would like to take the opportunity to provide a few tips to decrease the likelihood of becoming a victim.

Be aware of your surroundings. As you walk down the street, do not become so involved in your conversation, or listening to music that you lose awareness of your surroundings. Thieves look for people who are distracted.

Do not leave your cell phone or electronic device unattended while in a public place. Store it in a secure area while not in use.

If you become a victim, call law enforcement immediately. Do not wait. The chances of apprehending a suspect improves if law enforcement is called right away.

Activate the GPS tracking device on your cellphone and other electronic devices. If your device is not equipped with GPS tracking, after-market applications are available.

Use a security lock code, or PIN feature, to lock your cellphone.

Back up the information that is stored on your cellphone and electronic devices. This information may become critical if your device is stolen. You might need the information to cancel credit information so you do not become of identity theft also.

Partner to prevent or report crime by contacting your local Sheriff’s Station. Or if you wish to remain Anonymous, call “LA Crime Stoppers” by dialing 800-222-TIPS (8477), or text the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637,) or using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org/
