DETAILS:

This past week, 7 of San Leandro Police Department’s Police Explorers attended the San Diego County Law Enforcement Explorer Academy held at the University of CA San Diego. This was a 7-day, live-in leadership and training academy that was attended by approximately 250 police explorers from various law enforcement agencies throughout California. Explorers from local agencies in attendance included Hayward, Fremont, and Newark PD.

The Explorer Academy was a condensed version of a police academy and is divided into 3 phases: Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. Four of our Explorers attended the basic course, while 3 (who completed the basic course last year) attended the intermediate academy.

We are proud to announce that all 7 explorers successfully passed all tests during this academy and graduated this past Saturday morning. Graduates proudly display a blue and white ribbon on their uniform shirt, above their nametag. Explorers who graduated from Phase 1 last year and Phase 2 this year are recognized by the number “2” on center of their ribbon.

Each day began at 0530 hours with a uniform inspection, followed by physical fitness training, classroom instruction, practical exercises and demonstrations. Explorers were tested on their training throughout the week. Some of the training included:

• Ethics
• Team building and leadership training
• Entry-level police officer physical agility test
• Arrest and control techniques
• Report writing
• Sexual harassment
• Radio communications and procedures
• First Aid/CPR/Blood-bourne Pathogens
• Active shooter / Simunitions training
• SWAT and K-9 deployment and demonstrations
• Officer survival
• Sexual assault, gang, narcotics, domestic violence and robbery investigations
• High-risk car stops
• Responding to in-progress crimes
• Riot/Crowd control and chemical agents
• Traffic control, including the use of flares

The Explorers should be very proud of their accomplishments.

The San Leandro Police Department would also like to take a moment to thank Detective Ali Khan, Officer Joey Bacon and PSD Megan Wilske, who spend countless hours providing leadership, training and guidance to each of these young adults, while serving as advisors to our Explorer program.

The Explorer program is a volunteer program for young adults between ages 14-21. For additional information, please view the San Leandro Police Department’s website or email one of the listed advisors at [email protected].
