Details: On 07-20-12, Approximately 1:30 pm, a San Leandro Police Department employee was going through the departmental mail. She opened a letter addressed to the Police department. She immediately discovered there was an unknown white powder inside the envelope.
San Leandro Police Department staff members immediately went into their Hazardous Materials plan. Alameda County Fire Department's Hazardous Material Response Team responded and evaluated the situation. The material in the envelope was determined to be baking flour.
The San Leandro Police Department was able return to regular service once the Hazmat Team secured.
Lt. Randall Brandt said, "this was a perfect example of an employee recognizing something suspicious. The employee immediately reported her discovery to her supervisor who then requested the proper resources to respond."
