SLPD COMMENTS ON COLORADO THEATER TRAGEDY

Sandra Spagnoli Chief of Police
901 East 14th Street, San Leandro Ca 94577

PRESS RELEASE

DATE / TIME OF RELEASE: 07/20/12, 3 PM Crime: Not Applicable

PRESS RELEASE OFFICER: Lt. Randall Brandt Telephone: (510) 577-3232
______________________________________________________________________

Details: As many of you know there was a horrific incident committed at a movie theater in Colorado this morning. A gunman entered a theater with multiple weapons and discharged them randomly into a crowd of innocent people.

I'm sure a common question would be, how would our police department respond to a similar incident?

Our agency has created reality based training to prepare our staff for critical incidents.

Our tactical team participates in an annual anti-terrorism 50 hour long training opportunity that is known as "Urban Shield."

This training our tactical team has gained has provided them with the training and experience to share with the rest of our staff.

SLPD has trained in the Century Theaters building to familiarize ourselves with the layout. The theater also has officers assigned to it to prevent or respond to problems or violence.

When incidents like this occur throughout the world, our organization makes it a point to speak to our staff at briefings and using these incidents for training.

Lt. Brandt said, "We take pride in maintaining a safe community. Citizens play a part in this and they need to be aware of their surroundings and report suspicious activity. If they recognize someone that may be demonstrating some unusual behavior. Please report the behavior to the police so we are able to evaluate the situation."
