Updates to multiple, previous alerts this evening, July 6th

On July 6, 2012, at approximately 6:09 p.m., two uniformed officers assigned to patrol were in the area of 7th and Clay street attending to a call when they observed a female adult running towards them and waving her arms to gain their attention. A vehicle left the roadway behind her and went onto the sidewalk in what appeared to be a deliberate attempt to run the female over.

One of the officers discharged their firearm to prevent the driver of the car from running her over; the driver of the vehicle then collided with a parked police car.

No one was struck by the gunfire. The driver of the vehicle was transported to a local hospital for medical clearance due to his involvement in a vehicle collision.

The Oakland Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit and Internal Affairs Division have begun independent investigations into the circumstances of the shooting. Each use of potentially lethal force by an Oakland police officer necessarily causes investigation by the Department’s Major Crimes Section. An independent and concurrent investigation is also conducted by the Department’s Internal Affairs Division. Every instance is then presented to an Executive Force Review Board to determine whether the force used was in compliance with Departmental policies and procedures.

Also this evening, at approximately 6:25 p.m., officers responded to the 1000 block of 102nd Avenue on a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered a male suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. Responding officers arrested one male suspect in connection to the murder.

At approximately 7:20 p.m. officers responded to the 1600 block of 11th Street on a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered a male lying in the street suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. Medical personnel were on scene and pronounced the victim deceased.
