INDEPENDENCE DAY HOLIDAY AVOID THE 100 DUI CAMPAIGN - UPDATE 2 DUI ARRESTS NEARING 700 AFTER THE SMOKE CLEARS

Independence Day holiday Anti-DUI crackdown has resulted in several DUI arrests from local routine traffic enforcement and special Avoid the 100 DUI deployments in Los Angeles County this week.

From 12:01 AM Friday, June 29, 2012 through Midnight Wednesday July 4, 2012 officers representing 100 county law enforcement agencies have arrested 658 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

In 2011, in the four days leading up to the holiday, there were 836 DUI arrests. The 2011 campaign cannot be compared to this year as the 4th fell midweek this year resulting in enforcement being heightened on both the weekend before and after.

DUI arrest data collection will continue through midnight Saturday, July 7, 2012. Law enforcement officials are continuing DUI efforts throughout the county and region. Additionally, CHP Areas throughout the state have all available officers patrolling freeways and county roads throughout the weekend.

Police, Sheriff and the CHP encourage all motorists to help make your community safer: Report Drunk Drivers – Call 911. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety http://www.ots.ca.gov/ , through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration http://www.nhtsa.gov/ .

Statistical data on the number of DUI arrests and DUI fatal crashes will be released from the previous day’s activities. Avoid programs, named for the number of police agencies in each county will also concentrate during the 18-Day August/Labor Day period. In recognition that summer season is among the deadliest time of the year, law enforcement agencies throughout the county will be making every effort to arrest drunk drivers before another life is lost.
