Compton deputies arrest gang members after drive by shooting and pursuit.
On Monday, June 25, 2012, at 9:12 a.m, Compton patrol Deputies responded to the 1600 block of Piru Street regarding a “shots fired” call.
Upon arrival, they contacted a resident of the house who said four to five gunshots were heard. The victim saw an older model vehicle driven by a male Black adult drive away from the area. While speaking with the victim the Deputies saw what they believed to be bullet holes on various parts of the house.
Simultaneously, deputies began searching the area for the suspect vehicle. Shortly thereafter, they were flagged down by a person who informed them a black Chevy Monte Carlo occupied by three males was recently seen traveling at a high rate of speed on 134th Street. While speaking to the citizen, a vehicle matching that same description drove west on 132nd Street at a high rate of speed. The deputies followed the vehicle and a pursuit ensued. Utilizing the services of a Sheriff’s helicopter the vehicle was chased until the vehicle stopped in the 11900 block of Bellhaven Avenue.
At the end of the pursuit, the driver and front passenger fled from the vehicle. The remaining suspect stayed inside the vehicle and was immediately apprehended. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed that it contained an assault rifle, along with several expended .22 caliber casings.
One of the suspects that fled was later found in a converted garage at a residence on 119th Street. He surrended to Special Enforcement Bureau (S.E.B) personnel. The other fleeing suspect was found in the area by responding deputy personnel. All the suspects were positively identified by witnesses and or Sheriff’s Department personnel. They were transported to Century Regional Detention Facility and booked on a variety of felony weapons charges and evading the police. During the course of the investigation it was found that two other males had attempted to conceal the whereabouts of the suspect in the garage. They were also booked for harboring a fugitive.
It is believed that both the victim and suspects are members of rival street gangs. The investigation is being handled by detectives from the Sheriff’s Departments Operation Safe Streets Bureau (O.S.S).
