Suspect Shoots at Deputy in Compton, Deputy Returns Gunfire
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into a Deputy-Involved Shooting that occurred at Bullis Road & Orchard Avenue, Compton, on Sunday, June 24, 2012, at 12:42 P.M.
The incident began when the deputy attempted to contact the suspect at the intersection of Bullis Road and Orchard Avenue, in Compton. The suspect assaulted the deputy and fled on foot. The suspect, who was in possession of a handgun, ran into the nearby Compton Fashion Center.
The deputy requested backup from Compton Sheriff's Station deputies, contacted a security officer at the location and advised him of the armed suspect, and that the suspect had entered the shopping center.
The deputy and security officer proceeded to look for the suspect when they saw him exit the mall through an exit door located on the east side of the center.
As the deputy and security officer exited out the same door, the suspect fired multiple rounds from his handgun, missing them.
Both the deputy and security officer returned fire. The suspect was struck in the upper body.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in critical condition.
The suspect's handgun was recovered at the scene.

Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.

NARRATIVE:
Sheriff's Homicide Bureau detectives are en route to Bullis Road and Orchard Avenue, Compton, to investigate the circumstances surrounding a deputy involved shooting. No deputies were injured and there are no outstanding suspects.
The suspect has been transported to a local hospital; his condition is not known.
There is no further information at this time.
