Oakland Police Officers Carry the Torch for Special Olympics

On Tuesday, June 19, Oakland Police Officers received the Special Olympics Eternal Flame Torch from the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office and carried it from downtown Oakland into Berkeley, where the Torch was handed off to members of the Berkeley Police Department.

Thank you to the community members cheering our volunteer runners along the way.

The Special Olympics is an important event that gives people with intellectual disabilities opportunity for athletic competition and accomplishment. The games are made possible, in part, by funds raised by law enforcement agencies during the annual carrying of the Special Olympics Eternal Flame Torch relay. Last year over $42 million was raised. Support for the Special Olympics is just one of the Oakland Police Department’s (OPD) recent community volunteer endeavors.

Whether spearheading police station blood drives, raising money for childhood cancer research at Children’s Hospital or scooping ice cream sold for juvenile diabetes research at Wednesday’s Oakland A’s Annual Root Beer Float Day, OPD continues to demonstrate their commitment to the community.
